Things to watch out for at the Chalvet take off
Mainly for PG pilots - If you going for a glass off flight (4pm-ish) expect it to be windy (in summer time). Take warm clothes, a book, blanket and maybe even a picnic / thermos flask. Be prepared to relax a little. A launch window suitable nearly always opens. Be patient.... but not too patient. Many people have been psyched out when it was safe to go for a committed well timed launch. Be observant, watch and learn.
Hanglider pilots. Expect to see me rigging at around 3pm having made the most of the day doing other things. I love the mini XC-O/R that the glass off gives.

Be a courteous pilot - prepare your wing and pre-flight away from the main launch spots.
Understand that the school will be busy and that they will expect you to be efficient, respectful and safe.
Don’t hog the hill. Top landing is possible on the NW T/O a breeze on the S/SE T/O but do be considerate and careful. Mixed abilities from around the world will do the unexpected to you.
Watch out for line snags of the tufts rock/mud, build your wall, make a calm, committed launch. If you can, practice your strong wind launches before you arrive. If these are calm and well practiced you will be thankful when you are here, especially during busy, thermic take off times.

When the canopy comes up, don’t be surprised if it is turned by the thermal. Expect this and carefully counter it. Practice helps.
Don’t get psyched out. T/O has pilots of all abilities and is a great place to make friends. People here are serious about their flying.
When others are finding it hard to stay up, take care about your decision to launch. A small delay is way less hassle than a ride back up.
Move away, if you can, from the crowd. Using your mountain flying and thermo dynamic skills, go and find a spot that works for you. Accidents are rare here but they generally happen when people are flying too slow, maxing out weak lift close to the hill in close proximity to others. Some visitors here are crazy! Just move away from them. The hill is over 10kms long. Go and find a place to play or land.
Practice reverse launches before you get here. Get good at them.
If it’s windy at the compression point and people are making good headway around you in the sky, launch lower down IF you have good launch skills. If a beginner, sit it out. It invariably gets lighter
Expect the unexpected and don’t get cross, aggressive.... just relax |
