Weather at Saint Andre Les Alpes

St Andre enjoys a good 300+ days of sunshine each year and enjoys its own micro-climate. Aerogliss post weather reports daily in the club house. They have free internet access there - just buy a drink or two as you surf the weather channels.

Weather can tyically be broken down into 3 distinct flying modes/gears to suit all levels of pilots

  1. morning - very calm, amazing views and light
  2. afternoon - thermic, to incredibly thermic
  3. evening - lifty and mellow

I use my eyes, this weather site, and these rules to determin if I am going flying or not.

Click here for an up to date weather report.

As a general rule I do NOT fly when my eyes or the weather report indicates any of the following:

bullet_arrow

The wind is from: NNW, N, S, SSW, SW and the speed is forecast at greater than 15kmh

The wind is from: NNE, E, ESE and more than 10km (early morning and late evening ESE is often ok check with locals )

bullet_arrow If there is a very heavy, low inversion, the day is very bright/thermic and winds are above 15kmh
bullet_arrow If I can see a lot of wave bars, lots of really milky sky or fast moving cloud shadows
bullet_arrow If cu-nims are building in every direction
-NOTE:  Cu-nims are normal at certain times and safe flying is possible especially towards the end of the day. Just take care and seek local advice first
bullet_arrow Wind is indicated to be greater than 20kmh

There are so many great activities make the most of your non-flying time

Play safe, seek local advice

Most evenings you will enjoy a tremendous late glass off flight even when the day has been blown out. In the summer this might mean launching as late as 7-8pm. The sunset flying is incredible and mini XC still possible.
