What conditions to expect here in St Andre Les Alpes
St Andre has 4 very distinct seasons, each offering the pilot something different. Personally my favourite season is the Autumn where thermals are perfect for cruising smoothly on big lazy out and returns on my rigid hang glider . The landscape colours, sky and light are at their most beautiful.
Below is a list month by month of how it’s largely been over the recent years. Please do not hold me to this - you know how the weather changes. For example, New year’s day 2008 we were thermalling on the tandem paraglider on a gorgeous sunny day. New year’s day 2009 we went snowboarding at Allos because take-off was blocked by meters of fresh snow!

THINGS TO DO

| Jan to Mar |
T/O will either be open or blocked by snow. Flying will be generally smooth and lightly thermic. Flying further south is peachy and nicely thermic. If not much snow at this level mountain biking is fantastic. The local ski resort is 35 mins away has 400km of runs and is incredible. Low cost and very chilled. Lake is empty

Snow shoe to T/O Fly at local sites Col Dd Bleine, Gourdon, Greolieres or Ski/Snowboard at Allos

| Apr to Jun |
April & May is typically our rainy season but also a time when people fly from here to Chamonix/Grenoble and do huge flights. Launching as early as possible on good days and heading straight down route. Thermic, bumpy during early afternoon. Incredible glass offs in the early evening. Lake is almost full by June.

Bring a good water proof jacket. Possibly skiing to mid April. Sightseeing, climbing, Via Ferrata , canoeing, canyoning, Mountain biking, Trial biking

| July to Sept

Beginners can top to bottom and soar early morning till 12. Experts go on huge XC’s while everyone else heads to the beach to swim and chill. Be back up the hill for around 4pm to catch the evening flying and those returning from mammoth XC’s. Lake is full but begins to empty during September.

Everything.... except skiing and snowboarding.... especially water sports on the lake....

| Oct to Dec |
My favourite time. The flying days are shorter and softer. Which is perfect for Rigid wing flying. The temperature difference between day and night is huge.

Everything.... In mid December skiing is often possible Lake is empty

Sunset flying Saint Andre Les Alpes
Year round you can enjoy the increbile light we have here at sunset.
The mellow, easy, lift goes on and on. Perfect for beginners needing valuable airtime to gain air awareness skills and for thermalling practice.
I love the way it helps me decompress, recharge the batteries and make me realise just how blessed we are. Saint Andre Les Alpes is the best place in the world to fly.
