XC tips for flying in St Andre Les Alpes

• Speak to the locals, check the weather
• Prepare before you come re-read the chapters on mountain flying.
• Chose your time to fly. Fly in conditions that match your skill level, take plenty of water and sun screen with you.

Changing gears - Fly fast - Fly slow & climb

To get the most out of any day here always be ready to change gears and work on the principal of “what’s the day doing, know your averages”

• Average climb rate, sink, altitude, glide distances between climbs.
• Revise these mentally on course.
• Know when the averages are changing and adapt.

My gear changing (fly/climb) rational goes a bit like this for hangliding:

1.    Safety - Where is my safe landing spot. Can I reach it
= YES = Move forward
= NO = Quickly locate one - Then move to 2

2.    My last couple of climb were at 5ms+

= Same or less I carry on forward to find better lift

= Same or greater I climb depending on how much height I need. I rarely climb to cloudbase

3.    The day is going up more than its going down.

= YES - keep going hard

= NO - Gain height where ever I can
